An Oasis in Sandton – Burkleigh House

Recently Tiny and I were in Johannesburg for a rather long seminar which necessitated us being confined to the monotony of a chain hotel in the heart of Sandton, which as you know are generally somewhat soulless albeit enormously practical and cost effective – at least that is what I had assumed; until by complete accident we fell upon Burkleigh House. A guest house of 5 star standing in the heart of the metropolis with phenomenally exquisite gardens is pure tonic for the soul.

As the gates open at this lovingly hand built establishment one is transported to another world away from the concrete jungle, the noise and rush of Sandton and Johannesburg – bliss!

Everything I absolutely love in a home environment greeted me as we drove into the drive – a magnificent fountain in the middle of the drive, a Romeo and Juliet style balcony, rolling lush green lawns and a crystal sparkling blue pool – and the best was yet to come…

We were greeted by Patricia, the proprietor and what we were to find out over the next number of hours during our stay there – a multi talented woman – who proudly showed us around.

Patricia along with her builder personally laid many of the bricks on this property, she had a superbly clear vision of what she intended to create with Burkleigh House, with every one of the rooms designed differently and lovingly furnished with unique antique pieces sourced by her Antiques Dealer husband – what a fabulous combination!!

The gardens in this property are enormous, we found a nook under the blossoming tree and enjoyed a cool beer and reflected on the misfortune of not finding this place PRIOR to the seminar, being only a few minutes drive from the Sandton Convention Centre and superbly affordable – we sure would have had a much more pleasing time has we stayed at Burkleigh House for the seven nights of the seminar instead of only one night after the seminar. But I will be staying there at my next seminar in the city.

The rooms are spacious, plenty of room to swing the proverbial cat…. even so much that Tiny and I were able to do our daily exercises of kettle swings and bosu ball sit ups (we don’t go away without them!!).  The bed was enormous and perfectly comfortable wrapped in crisp white linen.

For us, being such foodies, the piece de resistance, was the breakfast… a classic English breakfast turned into a gourmet experience – truly delightful.

As we were preparing to depart this little piece of heaven we discover yet another of Patricia’s, she is a chef (no surprises there after the breakfast we had experienced) but she also has a bakery tucked away at the back of the property where her and her industrious staff bake spice biscuits and much more every morning for local bakeries, restaurants and guest houses – they are absolutely delicious!!

We can not recommend Burkleigh House enough – it is magnificent for private functions and weddings…. what a special find!!
